Barium sulfate is used as a constitutional pigment in coatings, and its role is to improve the thickness, abrasion resistance, water resistance, heat resistance, surface hardness and impact resistance of the coating.
It is prepared by mixing barium sulfide solution with mirabilite solution added after removing calcium and magnesium, reacting at 80 ° C to form precipitate, adjusting pH to 5-6 after suction filtration, water washing and acid washing, filtering, drying and crushing. It can also be prepared by reacting barium yellow halogen with mirabilite solution.

Extended information:
Use of precipitated barium sulfate:
The precipitated barium sulfate is a white amorphous powder with a relative density of 4.50 (15 ℃) and a melting point of 1580 ℃. Due to its high refractive index (1.63-1.65), it is white in color and has a certain hiding power.
It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acid, and soluble in hot sulfuric acid. It is easy to form mixed crystals with potassium permanganate, calcium carbonate or metal nitrate. It can be reduced to barium sulfide with carbon at high temperature. It is an important basic chemical raw material.
Main uses: used as raw materials or fillers for paints, coatings, inks, plastics, rubber and batteries; Surface coating agent for printing paper and copper plate paper; Sizing agent for textile industry; As a clarifying agent in glass products, it can eliminate foam and increase luster. It can also be used as a protective wall material for radiation protection, as well as in porcelain, enamel, dye and other industries, and as a raw material for manufacturing other barium salts.
